Capitol News Illinois’ mission is to increase access to quality state government news. As such, we’ve created the following republishing guidelines:
- News organizations are free to republish Capitol News Illinois’ website content in full under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
We understand there are spatial limitations, especially in print, so you are free to cut for space as needed, provided you don’t change the tone of the piece or omit key attributions or information. However, we greatly encourage you to use the entire story for your online versions.
- You MUST attribute Capitol News Illinois in the byline. If it doesn’t fit your style, the email address can be removed or placed elsewhere. But any story you republish must contain Capitol News Illinois somewhere in the byline, along with the author’s name. You may not tag or market our content as “special” to your publication or characterize it as freelance content.

- If you are publishing online, you must include this text at the end, link included: Capitol News Illinois is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service that distributes state government coverage to hundreds of news outlets statewide. It is funded primarily by the Illinois Press Foundation and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.
We encourage you to run this in print, but we understand it may need to be cut for space in print products in certain circumstances.
- You are free to supplement our stories with localized copy. That could be school superintendents, local elected officials, etc. It is even encouraged.
Supplemented copy should not intentionally alter the tone or facts of the story.
PHOTOS: You may republish any photos made available via capitolnewsillinois.com/pressroom, provided they are properly attributed with the information we provide. You can reuse these photos as file photos with other content, as long as properly attributed. Photos not made available via pressroom either don’t belong to us or are from a publishing partner, who you will need to reach out to if you want to republish.
DO NOT put a logo of your news outlet on Capitol News Illinois’ photos. If you make a graphic out of the photo that includes a logo, it must include the Capitol News Illinois logo. A file with the graphic can be provided to you upon request.
If you publish the photo on social media, you MUST credit Capitol News Illinois. We’d also prefer if you tag our page on the platforms where you’re republishing our photos.

PARTNER CONTENT: From time to time, we distribute or republish content from partners. In these cases, we will disable the republish button and we will not distribute the content via capitolnewsillinois.com/pressroom. To republish this content, you must reach out to the original publishing partner, whose information will be provided to you. Our partners’ republishing guidelines supersede these.
VIDEO AND SOCIAL CONTENT: Video and social media content may not be remixed for any purpose without prior authorization.
NEWSLETTERS: You may not republish our standalone newsletter content. Most of the stories published via newsletter are already on our site, which you may republish. But some content we write unique for the newsletter, and we maintain ownership.
LOGOS: Any logos specifically accompanying our stories must include the Capitol News Illinois logo – that is, if you are creating logos specifically to accompany Capitol News Illinois content, it must include a Capitol News Illinois logo.
Any outlet not receiving our daily emails can be placed on the mailing list by visiting here: https://eepurl.com/iA6YAI
VIOLATIONS: Repeated violations of the republication policy, following notice to any offending party, could result in CNI no longer sharing/distributing content with that news organization.
