Higher education officials say guardianship scam is not widespread problem

Officials from several public universities in Illinois told a panel of state lawmakers Thursday they do not believe there is widespread abuse of court-ordered guardianships that have enabled some students from wealthy backgrounds to obtain need-based student financial aid.

House panels to hear about guardianship financial aid controversy

Two Illinois House committees will hold a joint hearing Thursday in Chicago on the subject of wealthy parents who put their teenage children into guardianship in order to qualify for financial aid. It remains to be seen whether any of the attorneys or parents involved in that practice will show up to testify.
