Pritzker inks Tobacco 21, calls proponents ‘heroes’

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation making Illinois the first Midwestern state to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products Sunday in Chicago. The ceremony marks the end of a four-year effort to change the age from 18 to 21 to buy cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, chewing tobacco and other goods containing nicotine. The law takes effect July 1, 2019.

Gov. Pritzker to sign ‘Tobacco 21’ into law Sunday

Gov. J.B. Pritzker will sign into law a statewide initiative that raises from 18 to 21 the minimum age to purchase tobacco products. The signing ceremony Sunday in Chicago marks the end of a four-year effort by lawmakers and advocates to change the age to buy products containing nicotine — including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes and chewing tobacco, to name a few.
